Trenches near bushmead

Forums:

Great site. I live in bushmead and couldn't help notice the photo on this site of men digging what I presume where practice Trenches. Is it possible this site could be in bushmead. When you come into bushmead from bushmead road You come across some wasteland which has a series of trenches/ditches dug into the land. They seem out of Place with the general topography of the land. I can't think why they were dug. The photo of the men digging also looks like The warden hill area in the background. I know bradgers hill was used as a practice firing range. Is it possible the ditches Still present today where the original practice ones?

Thank you for your

Thank you for your contribution. The site will only grow, especially once it ties in with the exhibition and outreach work to come. This is quite possible. If you have taken a look around the site and seen various bits of information about Biscot Camp (search for it if you haven't), you will note that Biscot Camp was located on the edge of town. The landscape between Biscot and the Warden Hill area was entirely fields at that time, and I am certainly aware that training activity took place to the north of the camp from the war diaries I am studying. Numbers of shell and bullet casings are held in the Wardown Collection with unknown histories, but they date from WWI so may well be the result of training in the area i.e. found and handed in. I feel I may take a look at that area of land as I know it well and have never considered it to be a possibility until you piqued my interest with this post.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply david. Just read about the camp, it's only a 20 minute walk to bushmead from the camp. So i suppose it's possible. I know shooting practice took place in the woods behind bradgers hill, there is a public information sign up there that explains this. The fields are a 2 minute walk away from bradgers hill. Hence why I made the link. I will try and take some photos of the area later ( I only live round the corner) - david.
